Finding Fulfillment in the Pursuit of More: A Guide to Meaningful Growth
Every one of my clients is looking for something more in their career and life. But, surprisingly, many feel a lingering guilt for wanting it. They’re often caught in an internal debate: Should I go after more, or should I just be content with who I am and where I am right now?
If you step back from those emotions, you’ll see an irony in the search for more. In constantly chasing something bigger, you might overlook the value of what you already have. You may already have contentment, but it’s overshadowed by the pursuit of happiness.
Embracing the Desire for More with Clarity
Wanting more isn’t a bad thing, as long as it isn’t driven by a need to fill a void or from a sense of inadequacy. The real question is: Where does your desire for more come from? Imagine if you’re fulfilled and simply open to exploring new possibilities. This shift—moving from a place of wholeness rather than lack—changes everything.
This is the transformation I see in my clients through the coaching process. Initially, wanting more often feels like a response to a missing piece, leading to stress and self-doubt. But after gaining clarity on their values, boosting confidence, and building a balanced personal and professional life, “more” becomes an addition to an already complete self.
Moving from Lack to Wholeness: A Personal Story
Reflecting on my journey as a young athlete, my pursuit of “more” was driven by feelings of inadequacy. That sense of “lack” led to self-doubt, frustration, and a constant feeling of being incomplete. But now, knowing who I am, aligned with my values, I seek “more” with a sense of fulfillment. It’s no longer about filling a void; it’s about embracing life’s richness—seeking knowledge, experiences, and challenges that bring joy and growth.
Questions to Guide Your Pursuit of More
Consider your own desire for more. Is it rooted in lack, or is it coming from a place of abundance?
If it’s driven by a void: Take the time to understand that void. By addressing the underlying cause, you can fill it from within rather than seeking external solutions.
If it’s from a place of fulfillment: Embrace it! Pursue growth, novelty, and experiences that challenge and inspire you.
Both paths bring value and clarity to your journey, helping you understand your true motivations and allowing you to fully appreciate your current life and career for what they are—not for what they lack.
Living True to Yourself
By examining your feelings and motivations before taking action, you can find clarity and peace in your pursuit of more. Whether it’s addressing a deficiency or inviting challenge and novelty into your life, you’re ultimately moving toward a greater alignment with your authentic self. This balance—being grateful for the present while open to growth—is the essence of living true to oneself.
So, where does your desire for more come from? Take a moment to reflect on it, and let it guide you towards a future that enhances an already fulfilling life.
That is the essence of living true to oneself.
